The Alchemical Tradition has deeply influenced the development of Western Civilization. You won’t see this reflected in the history books because Established Institutions have often felt the offerings of Alchemy to be at cross-purpose to their own.

Declaring the Process of Awakening to be a matter of personal responsibility, realizable in this Physical Body within the scope of Mundane Time was in stark contrast to the message the King and Church wanted everyone to believe. Civilization can deal with War, Heresy, Terrorism, and the occasional Dissident, but the idea that True Liberty was something within the grasp of Everyone was an Intolerable Offense or Blasphemy. Royal Families and Clerics alike were bent on presenting themselves as the only Legitimate Authority or Gate-keeper for an Individual’s Salvation. Anything that unfetters the Mind Numbing qualities of Repressive Acculturation must be suppressed.

In order to work under such Repression, Alchemy learned to hide the details of its Methodology and Results in Codes and Hermetic Diagrams so as not to incur the wrath of Official Censor. It also learned to use the Greed for Wealth of the Royal Court and Church to establish Laboratories. There is gold and there is GOLD.
